Celebrating the 125th Anniversary of the Black National Anthem

Poet James Weldon Johnson wrote "Lift Every Voice and Sing," a tribute to Black endurance, hope, and faith on the occasion of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. His younger brother, J. Rosamond Johnson set the words to music, and 500 school children gave the debut performance in Jacksonville, Florida on February 12, 1900.
